About

The inaugural IoT (Internet of Things) Cup is a fun, innovative competition for professionals, academics, and university students to showcase their creativity, technology expertise and passion for business innovation in the Internet of Things.

With 20 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020, the Internet of Things enables physical objects or “intelligent things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable objects to exchange data into a connected world. The connectivity of the Internet of Things will rival past technological marvels, such as the printing press, the steam engine, and electricity.

The IoTCup mission is to celebrate skills of forward-thinking professionals and students that can prepare, adapt, thrive and lead in the next major technology growth area – IoT – and will drive a new competitive advantage for Australia and New Zealand.

How it works

IoTCup is an innovative hackathon celebration to build skills, collaboration and innovation capabilities among diverse professionals from a range of companies and backgrounds & students with a passion for the Internet-of-Things. Teams (up to 5 members) from the same company, or university, will prototype and test complex IoT solutions, with mentoring from some of the world’s leading vendors, technologists and engineers. 150 people (30 teams) will compete in the IoT hackathon challenge with competitors drawn from backgrounds in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths), Networks, Data Analytics and pure-play IoT providers.

Questions & IoT Challenges

Participants will be tasked with creating integrated IoT economic solutions – involving technology, systems, engineering, business, strategy, risk and security concepts. Teams will be judged based on three criteria:

1. Technical

Does it do what it says on the box? Does your solution work?

2. Commercialization

Is the solution actually solving a business need?

3. End-to-End

How will the solution go to market?
